Upcycling

Wat Chak Daeng Invites the Public to Transform PET Bottles into Monks' Robes
Caring for the environment to build a sustainable society is a collective responsibility. Meaningful, tangible results come only when all sectors work together—from reducing waste at the source and sorting waste properly to repurposing discarded materials.
One notable initiative is the project at Wat Chak Daeng in Samut Prakan province, which converts PET plastic bottles into monks' robes. This project embodies the idea of turning waste into something valuable, blending environmental stewardship with Buddhist merit-making while providing concrete benefits to the community. Sustainable waste management should begin with waste reduction and the rejection of unnecessary items—such as opting for cloth bags instead of plastic ones or using reusable containers rather than foam boxes. Nevertheless, when waste is inevitably produced, proper sorting and repurposing remain essential strategies for minimizing environmental impact.

Transforming PET Bottles into Robes through Upcycling Innovation
Wat Chak Daeng invites the public to sort and donate clear PET plastic bottles. These are then processed into fabric used to tailor robes for Buddhist monks. The project employs the concept of "upcycling” adding value to waste materials by turning them into functional, useful products.
The process begins with the sorting of clear PET plastic bottles at Wat Chak Daeng. Volunteers work together to remove labels, separate caps, clean the bottles, and compress them into large bales—a step that saves space during storage and transport to the processing plant. At the plant, the plastic bottles are shredded into small pieces, known as "flakes," which are then thoroughly washed, melted, and transformed into recycled plastic pellets. These pellets are processed into recycled polyester fibers. To ensure the resulting fabric is well-suited for its intended use, these fibers are blended with cotton and zinc-infused polyester—a material with antibacterial properties that enhances breathability, softness, and quick-drying capabilities, while also reducing unpleasant odors. The blend is then woven into fabric and dyed in accordance with monastic regulations.
Once the fabric is produced, the rolls are sent back to the Wat Chak Daeng community, where voluntary residents in the community tailor them into monks’ robes. This process not only adds value to plastic waste but also creates jobs and generates income for the local population.
In terms of the quantity of plastic required, approximately 15 PET bottles are needed to produce enough fabric for a single monk robe, while about 60 bottles are required to produce a full set of monastic robes. Support the Sangha while contributing to a practical, sustainable cause.
Join us in an eco-friendly act of merit-making by donating PET plastic bottles. You can help protect the environment and earn merit by sorting and donating clear PET plastic bottles to Wat Chak Daeng. Please prepare your bottles as follows: remove the caps and labels, cut around the neck of the bottle (following the project’s specific guidelines), and flatten the bottles to save space. Once prepared, pack them securely for transport.
Please send your donations to: Wat Chak Daeng, 16 Moo 6, Phetchahueng Road, Soi 10, Song Khanong, Phra Pradaeng, Samut Prakan 10130. For individuals or communities that regularly sort waste and have collected a large quantity of PET bottles—at least 6–7 large trash bags’ worth—you may contact Wat Chak Daeng to arrange for a vehicle to pick them up from a designated location by calling 064 651 9015.
We invite everyone to be part of transforming waste into something valuable by starting with waste sorting in your daily life. What many might consider useless plastic bottles can be repurposed into monk robes—a truly practical application that creates lasting value for the environment, Buddhism, and the community.
